Laurel’s work with families has spanned the globe for over 25 years! She has made it her mission to ensure that families are well – mind, body, and spirit. Her speaking comes from the heart, incorporating humor and real-life experiences that connect to every audience (adult, student, or parent) in a way that stays with them long after they’ve heard her speak.
She is the Founder of Children’s Wellness International and the creator of numerous children’s programs including Meditating Munchkins™, Crazy for Crystals™, and Yay! Yoga™ to support children’s mental health. Her TV Series (currently in production) and Podcast (launching September 2020) Help! We’ve Got Anxiety!™ brings families content that supports family well-being! Fun ways to support children ages 3 – 8 through meditation and mindful moments
Practical applications or practices of mindfulness.
1. Keep it simple and make it fun! Using play-based mindful activities i.e. practicing breath work, transitioning from chaos to calm, using artifacts to support calming the mind (crystals or “treasures” from nature), using animals or stuffies to soothe
2. Involve the entire family in the meditation/mindfulness practice – children model adults/older siblings/significant people (teachers, grandparents, aunts, babysitters)

Mindful education involves more than sharing practices. To truly engage children and engender relevance and meaning an enquiry-based approach based on robust content is optimal. With this foundation, children can develop an open, creative mindset and compassionate ‘viewing frame’ in life to effectively manage challenges and anxiety. And to make conscious, kind choices for the self, others and the world.

Kathy Marvel • www.thesunshinespotlight.com
Kathy Marvel is a first-grade teacher and has taught in Colorado for the past twenty-six years. Kathy brings mindfulness to the classroom through daily lessons including instruction around different breathing techniques. Her latest children’s book, “And She Said Breathe” teaches some of those breathing techniques and how they can impact your brain and body in different ways. Kathy also has a video series, Operation Less Stress, available on YouTube, which includes tips on how to use mindfulness to reduce the effects of stress. Her newest podcast, The Sunshine Spotlight, provides topics related to mindfulness that help the audience to live life exceptionally. Kathy is a speaker/instructor on mindfulness and provides workshops for both adults and children.
What we will learn in this presentation or interview
When we pay attention to our breathing we slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure, and we can override the alarm response in our brain. This gives control back to the part of our brain responsible for higher-level thinking and problem-solving. As children focus on their breathing through daily practice, their brain begins to create a habit of reacting to stress and anxiety by focusing on the breath. This allows kids (and adults) to address difficult situations with thoughtful responses instead of impulsive reactions. Kathy will explain what happens in our brain when we encounter stress, discuss why breathing techniques work, and explain in detail how to incorporate these breaths into daily life.
